Location: ZOO, Wrocław, Poland
Specie: Great Grey Owl

The Great Grey Owl or Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) is a very large owl, distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. In some areas it is also called Phantom of the North, Cinereous Owl, Spectral Owl, Lapland Owl, Spruce Owl, Bearded Owl, and Sooty Owl.

Adults have a big, rounded head with a grey face and yellow eyes with darker circles around them. The underparts are light with dark streaks; the upper parts are grey with pale bars. This owl does not have ear tufts and has the largest facial disc of any raptor.

Their breeding habitat is the dense coniferous forests of the taiga, near open areas, such as meadows or bogs. Great Grey Owls do not build nests, so typically use nests previously used by a large bird, such as a raptor. On the nesting grounds, they mainly hunt at night and near dawn and dusk; at other times, they are active mostly during the night.

My internship has one of those. They called him Saami.  :)

I always feed him dead young chickens. It's cool when he flies around. But it looks kinda sick when he eats a tiny chicken..  :L

Yeah, seen in the zoo some eagles fed with little chickes. Kinda weird, but they got to eat, right?

Indeed. And then they don't need water. There's enough moisture in them to keep the owl humid aswell.  :)
